This audio tour of the cell block is incredible. Authentic voices from prisoners and guards of old bring the story of this building to life. It is well done. If you love history you will love this tour. I took my time and walked around the island as well - bring layers as it gets quite windy. The shop offers a good selection of Alcatraz swag and lots of books that tell these stories on a deeper level. Highly recommend.

Brilliant! The volunteers are knowledgeable and friendly and the island itself is such an interesting place to visit. I didn't think I was going to like an old jail - but it is so much more. Top 3 things to know1) It is steep. If you have difficulty walking up steep hills, take a ride from the bottom (where you get off the ferry).2) The audio tour is incredible - but you don't need to rush to get it. We stopped half way and watched a movie so, when we did get to the audio tour, the crowds had dispersed and it didn't take that long to pick up our headsets and get going. There is a lift available for people who can't access the stairs.3) The atmosphere is hard to describe. I really felt like I was walking in the footsteps of the inmates. The history is brought alive through some great narration by both past inmates and guards. MoreThere is a large gift store here and you get some stunning views of the bay, the Golden Gate Bridge and the city skyline.Definitely worth a visit!

Went for a ride today, and really enjoyed it! Jay, our pilot, was extremely experienced, and shared many interesting stories about his life. The ride was very surreal, calm and breathtaking. It was an experience to remember, and we are really glad we did it. Thanks NVA!

Amazing vacancy, was given a nice pitch black cell. The food service was pretty great, i was usually given a few burnt bread chunks here and there. Befriended a nice rat i named Al who tried to eat my toes while i was sleeping. Highly recommended place.

Very nice! Small little rooms for me and my buddies. Bread was 10/10 and water was immaculate. I made new friends and I would highly recommend going there for a long vacation.

Interesting and significant historical site. A bit too expensive, but that's America--charge your citizens for what other developed countries would offer for free. The docents were really energetic and caring; they deserve 6/5 stars. The social justice aspect was good. Our prison state is deplorable.

After watching and loving the movie, "The Rock", I had to go visit and tour the island when the opportunity presented itself. Definitely worth a few hours of your time and the $40 ferry ride. Self-guided audio tour is great and right to the point. Maybe 45 minutes or so. You can stay as long as you like on Alcatraz island, but the last ferry leaves at 4:30pm. Definitely check it out!

Great place but i was told to keep a tight grip on soap. Don't know what that's about. Other than that great friendly community.

What an amazing experience. My family of 6 thoroughly enjoyed citing Alcatraz. Even with a 5 year old and a 1 year old in a stroller we found almost everything accessible. From the historical storytelling to the magnificent views you will have an enjoyable time. BOOK ON ADVANCE, this is a must if you plan to visit, especially if you want to do the night tour. 5 Stars 🌟

Definitely worth the money! You not only get to see the infamous prison and learn about it's history, but you get to ride on a ship and bet breath taking views of the city. Make sure you do he full audio tour and follow it to the "T"! Also, the "mandatory" briefing at the start isn't really mandatory. The ranger might heckle you if you deviate though.

Was there a few years ago with the girlfriend lovely place great history and lovely staff there was a nice guy on the counter Kevin. I had a nice chat with because recognized my Dublin accent. Great place definitely recommend.

Unique national park of one of the world's most infamous prison. The visit starts from Alcatraz Landing in SF. We could buy tickets at the booth but have heard that advance tickets are needed in peak times. The ferry ride over is scenic and takes about 15 min one way. Once on the island, you can walk around on your own or take a guided tour led by a ranger. Inside the prison itself, there is a free self-guided audio tour, narrated by former inmates and wardens. Worth a visit if in SF.

Great Place to Visit when you are in San Francisco. The cruise ride to the island via the bay is beautiful. It's better the buy the tickets early because it fills up pretty fast. The Alcatraz prison tour is worthwhile and the Audio tour is very informative. The view of the SF skyline and Bridges are worth to check :)

It's a must see in San Francisco! Be sure to bundle up, it's pretty much cold year round :D Wear comfortable shoes!

What an expeience it was to come and visit this island. I was always a big fan of Clint Eastwoods Movie Alcatraz so to see it fully was very memorable. You will love very minute of it.

It was amazing to be able to come here. The amount of history that you get to see is rarely equalled. It is one of those places in the country that I will always recommend to people.

A must place to visit when you arrive in this unique city. Yes, it's creepy, but surprisingly refreshing.

Was so worth the money. We spent about 150.00 altogether as a family of four. Make sure you eat prior to going there's no food or drinks permitted on the island except for a very small shop that's on the island and is often closed. You'll be there for a while. Getting to the prison it's self requires some steep hill walking so make sure you have comfy shoes and comfortable clothes. Enjoy!

The audio tour was great! I love that you could pause it anytime you wanted to spend a little longer anywhere. I'd highly recommend visiting Alcatraz if you have time while your visiting San Francisco.

Iconic spot and frankly deserves the hype. Tickets aren’t too expensive considering you could spend a whole day there if you really want. The free self guided audio tour is definitely a must x it’s much more interesting than you may think. The island isn’t too big but it packs a lot in a little space, and you should definitely visit if you’re visiting San Francisco. Already been here a couple times when my family and girlfriend came to visit, and I would gladly come again.

Visited in November 2019, so low season I'd assume. Well if you've never been, it really is almost a must visit. The system going in and out runs well, but do be prepared to wait here and there for the boat. The audio tour helps make the visit far more interesting, but I can't help feeling it still falls a bit flat. It is still an interesting visit don't get me wrong. Worth it for sure, even almost purely for the status of it.

Must go!!! The view is amazing going to the Island and the view of San Francisco from the Island. It is an experience well worth it. There is a audio headset tour of the prison that tell you the heroic and tragic stories of the previous tenants of Alcatraz. The guards and staff families that lived in the Island and also the inmates that attempted escapes. From the army that gained back control of the island to the bravery and quick thinking of the guards when life and death came into play.

What a wonderful Tour experience! The guide we had was awesome and very knowledgeable. There is also an awesome audio tour that is very engaging. Be sure to book ahead of your vacation, these tickets sell out way in advance!

A member of the National Park club, Alcatraz is a great place to go if you're in San Francisco and want to experience some lesser known history. While some of the island is roped off because of erosion, the cell block is open to the public and they have excellently made audio tours available that explain each section of the facility. The boat ride to the island can be a bit choppy but the views are incredible and you can get some amazing pictures of the island and the San Francisco skyline.

If you are going to San Francisco:) You must take the Alcatraz Tour. They offer day and night tours to this beautiful island in the San Francisco Bay. The ferry takes you out and you can stay as long as you like in the day as the ferries come and go all day long. Lots to see and do on the island as well as tour the renowned prison. They offer unique souvenirs and sometimes entertainment outdoors as well as videos inside the prison. Lots of great restaurants right in front of you when you return. We spent the entire day learning the true history of this Island. It was amazing, interesting and lots of fun. The tour tickets are a great price too.

One of the BEST self-guided audio tour I've ever been on! Alcatraz was worth every penny, and it was the best thing we did in San Francisco. It's a beautiful island now - hard to believe that less than a hundred years ago there was no greenery at all!

A nice boat ride to the island and a very informative and interesting audio tour of the prison. The views of the San Francisco bay are magnificent. This was definitely a highlight of our trip... It was all so much more than we were expecting!!!

Lives up to the hype. We spent a couple of hours here - and took hundreds of photos - but could’ve spent an entire day.Interesting tour options - we opted for the audio recorded tour which was informative and let us go at our own pace, stop for photos, etc. Really interesting history - fun to explore the island, see the cells and administration rooms, and get a sense for how it all operates.Awesome views of the city, Golden Gate Bridge, etc. Great place for photos.

If you’re coming to SF, put this on your itinerary ASAP! Tickets need to be purchased ahead of time, but it’s an amazing experience that shows a different side of the city. Couldn’t recommend it more!

What an amazing experience as a tourist attraction. The audio guide is just perfect, telling you a nice story while guiding you around the main building, while they also offer walking tours and a brochure for those seeking more detailed information. The staff is also very helpful!Very nice views, although there's obviously some heavy vibes on the island.Overall, it's a nice experience and those in San Francisco shouldn't miss it!

After a little cruise with a friendly staff, we put a foot on this legendary island! As the visit starts with the impressive shower room, your travel will only get more unsettling. I will stop spoiling you and encourage you to go...

Impactful. Real human beings lived in 5 foot wide by 9 foot deep by 7 foot high cells. We listened to the announcer right as we got off the ferry, the historian who did the walking tour and the headphone, self-guided tour. Somber would be how I would describe it. Be prepared for a climb and windy conditions. It is a must if you are interested in history, the criminal justice system or just human interest stories.

The behind the scenes tour was amazing and very insightful. Learned a lot during the trip. Special thanks to Seth, for helping us out with our tickets, and our tour guides Steve and Jackson. Great job from the staff. Everyone was very nice and helpful. I didn't get her name but a different staff member even worked the opening and closing of the doors for us. Wonderful time!

One of my favorite places in San Francisco. I would definitely go there one more time to listen stories, look at the downtown from island.

It's a self tour which I loved..dope views..and the prison itself is crazy huge!!

Didn’t get a chance to visit it but saw it from afar and it was still a beautiful sight. Always wanted to go visit here after seeing it in COD. Will visit in the future but need to book reservation about 3 months in advanced.

This was a great place to check out while we were out sight seeing in San Francisco. There is so much to see, from the cells to the gardens. Some cool old photos...Interesting to see what life was like here. Great view of San Francisco from here...

We are so happy that the National Park Service took control and spared this national treasure. The somber atmosphere of this military base-turned-prison was very apparent, and the guides offered information that was both interesting and educational. Please Do take the behind-the-scenes tour! It really adds to the experience.

I loved going to the rock. But, I didn't like the self tour. It was very boring. I was told that they were going to open cell block A and that they would announce when they would open it and they did not do so. The people that work there are absolutely great!! They are kind, caring, helpful, and very respectful. I am in a Wheelchair and they made sure that I safe at all times, that I knew where to load and unload the boat at. Thank you all so much for being so wonderful!!! 💚💜💚💜💚

Great historic place to visit, very interesting, would highly recommend the audio tour. The ferry trip there and back also offers great views and photo opportunities on a clear day. Allow approx 3 hours for the full trip.

I really enjoyed our family trip to Alcatraz. Fascinating experience. I believe this is something you have to do once, but probably not twice.

Amazing place. We decided to dress up like inmates...and boy we felt like celebrities as everyone wanted pic6with us! Even the safe played alone in jokes. The head set was so interesting to listen to. The outside areas were beautiful to explore. I'd definitely return, I feel like one day just wasn't enough!

Such a cool experience and place to visit. I absolutely loved the feel of walking through this once high security prison. The audio tour was really cool and fun as well. I'm from Australia and this was an overall great experience and would recommend to everyone to go there! Loved it.

The island itself is a history book, it is also the background for some blockbuster movies. If the weather is right, you can have a magnificent view of San Francisco. It is a place where you can spend a whole day. Bring a jacket and a sun hat, it can be windy and there is not much shade in the trails.
